Hatching Vain Empires

Gillian was using a cane to get around, although it was hardly necessary. When Riley called to let her know about the "special guest" she was about to receive, she let the temporary coroner know that she was able to do the autopsy. The body was delivered to her and Gillian removed it from the stiff black bag to begin her work. Four years ago she had examined the shell of another angel. That one had been forcibly removed and, from what Riley and Priest said, it seemed Sariel had left her shell willingly. She touched Sariel's cheek and pressed her lips together in a passing moment of grief. Sariel wasn't really gone, but she still felt the loss.

She had removed the clothes and washed the body when Priest arrived.

"Caitlin." She glanced at Sariel's body. "I was just about to start--"

"I know. I was hoping I could... assist. Or just..." She furrowed her brow and shook her head slowly. "I'm not sure what I want. Sariel's last act on this plane was to make me admit I'm more human than angel. I guess I just want to see how different we really are when it comes down to it."

Gillian nodded. "Well. I could use an assistant in the know. Scrub up." Priest started for the prep room. "Caitlin?"

"Yes?"

"I've known you as a mortal, and I've known you as an angel. I don't think you're either one. I think you need both to make yourself whole. You can't just ignore one half of yourself and carry on. You're a package deal."

Priest considered that. "Like you and Riley."

Gillian smiled. "Yeah. If you want to consider it like that. You may not always get along with Zerachiel, but you shouldn't be at war with her, either. You need to find a harmonious balance between the two."

"Thank you, Gillian." Priest smiled. "That's... just..." She sighed. "Thank you."

Gillian nodded. "You can put on the apron you find in there, too. I'll finish preparing the body while you get ready."

Priest disappeared into the prep room and Gillian placed her cane against the wall before approaching the table again.

After the autopsy, Priest walked home alone. She could have flown, but the ache in her thighs and back helped her connect with her mortality. Once there she locked the door and rested her head against the chipped-white paint of the wood. She was exhausted, and the rooms of her home seemed hollow. The praise music drifting through the floor made her feel slightly more elated, but her depression was deep. She left the lights off in her living room and went into the bedroom, undressing in front of the full-length mirror on the back of her closet door. When she was naked, she ran her hands over her curves.

Sariel's body had been nearly identical to a regular mortal's, according to Gillian. There was a unique bundle of muscles between the shoulder blades and, concealed along either side of the spine, were contracted wings. Gillian asked her what should be done with them, and Priest assured her they would fade eventually.
